Construction began under Charles Jackson, who died shortly thereafter. The property was later acquired by Major Archibald Clark, a sawmill owner appointed Collector of the Port of St. Marys by President Thomas Jefferson. Clark became known for his stand against British naval forces and was briefly imprisoned after refusing to surrender the city’s assets.
The estate later welcomed notable guests, including Aaron Burr, who stayed here following his 1804 duel with Alexander Hamilton, and General Winfield Scott, who stayed at the property upon his return from the Florida Indian Wars.
In 1999, Thomas Nesbitt, a direct descendant of Clark, purchased the property and completed an eight-year restoration following U.S. Department of the Interior Historic Preservation Guidelines. During this period, Catherine Nesbitt operated the A. Clark Antique store from the property.
