Bald Mountain Estate is particularly notable for its history, privacy and magnificent views; a tranquil retreat to gaze upon the mountain fog lifting with the sunrise and fireflies dancing and crickets serenading as the sun sets. The peaceful estate is an ideal gathering place to celebrate, explore, relax and enjoy the natural beauty and mountain air awakened amid Lake Lure and the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Lake Lure is conveniently located approximately midway between Asheville and Charlotte, and has been a “gold-standard” Blue Ridge destination since its settlers searched for gold and commemorate it as the birthplace of America’s first one-dollar gold coin. The area also has a nostalgic connection to movies, excellent cuisine and unparalleled adventures to discover at Chimney Rock State Park.

The intricate style of the Bald Mountain Estate creates a charming ambience surrounding the 3,532 +/- square foot home, appointed on 135 +/- acres, and featuring 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a two-story great room with a spiraling staircase and floor-to-ceiling windows with picturesque views of green pastures, rolling hills, streams and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The estate is a unique combination of its original 1930 design inspired from period architect Frank Lloyd Wright, with an Art Deco era renewal in 1970. The property was originally created and built by the Cheek family, heirs of the Maxwell House brand, and later enhanced by Rolland King, master developer – and founder of the neighboring Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure.

The exterior of the home showcases spacious stone patios, manicured lawns, fragrant floral gardens and beautiful magnolia trees. A guest house and lodge adjoin the home by a covered walkway with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a full kitchen, stone fireplace, wet bar and large recreation room, with an adjacent four-car carport.

It also includes a 16-stall, 40 x 100 +/- square foot barn, an additional storage barn and three-car garage and workshop, two pastures, timberland and an authentic (modernized) two-bedroom log cabin. This parcel will also convey with a lot within the Rumbling Bald Resort development. This will allow the new owner access to all the desirable amenities that members enjoy.

The Rumbling Bald Resort located directly on Lake Lure, and adjacent to this property , features a private beach as well as dock fishing – with a fishing license, and additional resort amenities cited here. Resort guests and members also enjoy golf, swimming and a variety of food and drink offerings, lake tours and boat rentals, including pontoon boats, kayaks, paddle boats, canoes and SUP boards.

Bald Mountain Estate History

This historic estate, originally “Faraway Farm”, was built in 1939 by celebrated museum administrator Leslie Cheek, heir to the Maxwell House Coffee fortune. The farm was the Cheek family safe-haven during WWII.

In the 1930’s, Leslie Cheek viewed Lucius Morse’s plans for a luxury resort development along the shores of Lake Lure. Cheek was inspired by Morse’s visions for the area, by his development of Chimney Rock Park and construction of the world-class hydro-electric dam (used to create Lake Lure.) Thus, Leslie Cheek selected a site at the south shore of Lake Lure, to build his private estate.

In 1957 the Cheek family sold the estate to Rolland King, a developer from south Florida. Rolland King had gained accolades for his Sarasota developments of Gulf Gate and Village Green, his Bradenton developments at Whiskey Creek and Village Gardens, as well as Governors Harbor Development in the Cayman Islands.

Rolland King changed the name of the farm from “Faraway Farm” to “Bald Mountain Farms”. King utilized the farm as a summer retreat for his large family. In 1965, King began to develop the lake-front area of the property. He built a dinner club (now Lakeview Restaurant/Legends on the Lake) and a golf course (now Bald Mountain Golf Course.) He developed a swimming pool, beach and marina area and began promoting the destination as a mountain resort called “The Bald Mountain Club at Lake Lure.”

In the 1970’s, King partnered with Wyndham and other time-share corporations to construct condos and resort housing throughout the property. The resort became known at Rumbling Bald Resort.

Today, the Rumbling Bald Resort boasts premier dining and a cocktail lounge, with a deck area for viewing the lake and outdoor dining. The golf pro shop and another casual restaurant and bar overlook a world-class 18-hole golf course, and the course is open to the public.

Since 1957, Faraway Farm / Bald Mountain Farms has served as the private, family home of Rolland King; original developer of Rumbling Bald resort.
