South Star Fuel Center brings $1.8 million

BIRMINGHAM , AL - A fuel center and 4.2 development acres in Birmingham's busy Finley Avenue Corridor sold for $1.82 million on March 30th, as a dozen bidders from six states gathered at the Medical Forum to compete for the properties, with J.P. King Auction Company, Gadsden, managing the sale.

Georgia C-Stores, of Hot Springs, Ark., emerged as the high bidder for the South Star Fuel Center, with a final bid of $1,457,500.

The second property - a 4.2-acre development tract - went to Johnnie Morris, a Warrior resident who is part owner of the adjacent property currently leased to Alabama Brick Delivery, a family owned brick distributor that has announced plans for a new 5,800-square-foot headquarters.

Morris, who bid $364,100 for the property, declined to announce specific plans for it, though he said he would likely offer a lease to Alabama Brick.

"The Finley Avenue Corridor has generated a lot of buzz lately, and today's results will probably feed that a bit," said Craig King, president of J.P. King. "The Kenworth truck dealership down the street has attracted some new development. With I-65 running right through the area, a couple of minutes from downtown, this corridor has been a gem waiting to be discovered."

Tuesday's sale attracted bidders from Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama.

South Star Fuel Center, a Texaco dealer and convenience store and truck stop, is a longtime landmark of the area.
