Technology entrepreneur's Evergreen mansion sells for $2.86 million

EVERGREEN – Retired Silicon Valley entrepreneur Doug Polley sold his Evergreen mansion for $2.86 million Thursday in an auction that drew 10 registered bidders and almost 100 spectators.

“We knew we’d have a strong sale, though I didn’t really realize just how many people in this area are interested in the auction method for selling high-end properties,” said Craig King, president of J.P. King Auction Company, Gadsden, Ala., which managed the sale. “We had a lot of brokers and property owners who wanted to see how an auction works, and that’s always good to see,” he said.

Purchasing the home on 14 acres was William D. Brick, a Denver real estate investor specializing in Class A office space. Brick plans to make the Evergreen home his primary residence, said King. The home includes a theater, sauna, steam room, wine cellar, and four-car garage.

With the Evergreen auction completed, the auction team packed up and headed for Durango, where they will auction Polley’s other Colorado home at 11 a.m. Saturday. That home, with 37 acres and its own lake – is located in the Durango area’s exclusive Celadon community.

“Mr. Brick got a great home for his money, and somebody has an opportunity for another great buy on Saturday,” said King. Like the Evergreen home, the Durango estate will sell absolute, meaning it will go to the highest bidder regardless of price, with no minimum or reserve.

Bidding on the Evergreen mansion opened at just over $2 million and continued for about 15 minutes before settling at the $2.86 million sale price. Polley, former senior director of operations for networking giant Juniper Networks, had finished building the home in 2003 and intended to make it his full-time residence. After deciding to remain in Rhinebeck, N.Y. to be closer to his family, he decided to sell both Colorado homes.

Bidders began gathering at the Evergreen home around mid-morning Thursday. A large table of hors d’ oeuvres included fondue and crab, and a pianist played on a balcony overlooking the Great Room.

“Mr. Polley loves Colorado, but he rarely gets here any more,” said King. “He certainly doesn’t spend enough time in the state to justify two luxurious homes like these.”
