Hampton Evergreen home sells at auction for $3,080,000
EVERGREEN, COLO. -- Eleven bidders spent a half hour competing for Atlanta Braves pitcher Mike Hampton's home in Evergreen, Colo., and when auctioneer Craig King pronounced the property ""sold,"" the high bidder had purchased the home for $3,080,000.
""We had a gorgeous day for an auction, and a strong field of bidders came out to participate,"" said King, president of J.P. King Auction Company, Gadsden, Ala., which managed the sale.
The home features a stand-alone gymnasium (with half-court basketball court and juice bar), a 40-foot waterfall and equestrian facilities.
Hampton purchased the home when he was a starting pitcher for the Colorado Rockies and added the gymnasium in 2001. He was traded to the Braves in 2003 and now has homes in Atlanta and in central Florida, where he grew up. Hampton is now in his 12th season in the major leagues, with a lifetime major league earned run average of .399.
